2. The Arctic Museum, illustration of Umberto Nobile’ s adventures.
3. Umberto Nobile, General of the
Italian Air Force, began his polar experience in 1926, designing and piloting the airship NORGE, and
reached the North Pole. It was the first successful Arctic expedition. Nobile intended to repeat the enterprise
in 1928 with the airship ITALIA and reached the North Pole again carrying out some important
scientific discoveries. But, on the way back, the bad weather
caused the airship to crash on the ice. The people who survived, including
Nobile himself, experienced all the worst difficulties
in the sea sleeping in the famous RED TENT, which had fallen from the airship after the collision.
The crew was recued by the Russian
icebreaker KRASIN.
4. 5. 6. 7. I didn’t
expect to find in the museum photos, books and other documents which remembered the famous striking adventure
Nobile achieved. I was impressed by the way the man who
guided us in the visit spoke about this great adventure. He was very proud when
he said that he had met Nobile’s daughter Maria in Milan and then in a window he showed me the photo of this meeting. He was there, in the photo.
