Hill of crosses, situated
in Šiauliai in
northern Lithuania
The Hill of crosses is an important site of
pilgrimage. The origins of this is uncertain, but it is believed that the first
crosses were placed after the 1831 uprising.
In the soviet period the
crosses were demolished three times, but reappeared increasingly numerous.
In 1993 the Pope Giovanni
Paolo II visited this place and donated a gorgeous cross that is situated at
the entrance.
The exact number of
crosses is unknown, but estimates put it at about 55000 in 1990 and 100000 in
2006. This site of pilgrimage is in fact very big, about 12 km long.
Hill of crosses is an
important religious place, where everybody can put a cross for asking God
something.
When we went with our hosts we have the possibility to put something
and I put a small wooden angel.
There is a legend which
says that anyone who steals a cross or an angle from this place will die or will
have an unhappy life.
I was amazed when I saw
this suggestive place.
