Kernave

1-3. Kernave is a beautiful archaeological and UNESCO world heritage site by the river Neris, about 35 kilometers from Vilnius. Kernave was inhabited already at the end of the Paleolithic era (even called "stone age"), and the first mention of a town are from 1279. There are no town or ruins left today in Kernave, but with a little bit of fantasy, the castles and village can be imagined on the four hills and in the valley.

4. Next to the valley are two chapels, a church and the foundations of an ancient church. One chapel is wooden with folkloric style, and the other is made from bricks and represents the late classicism. The present church is built 1910-1920, and has many neo-gothic elements.

5. Still today, Kernave is a venue for many pagan celebrations, such as the Rasa festival, a tradition started by Lithuanian university-students in 1967. Also many folk-festivals and Medieval-festivals are held there. Archaeologists are still searching the area.

6-7. I have never visited such a place before. The layers of history from stone age to 20th century, and the mix of Christianity and paganism creates a fascinating, rare combination. The breathtaking scenery makes feel respectful to nature and history. I recommend visiting Kernave to everyone, but make sure you have comfortable shoes!
